CEO Michael Lavery, nominated as ‘Marketing Pioneer’ in the CIM Global Marketing Excellence Awards 2023-24, has worked at a senior level in external relations since 2001, building on strong private sector and consultancy experience to lead award-winning professional teams delivering transformative impact across brand, strategic marketing, communications and external relations in the UK and internationally, and as a former adviser to the House of Lords.
Michael worked in Higher Education leadership for 12 years (as Executive Director & Deputy CEO at Teesside University and as Director of Marketing & Communications at Durham University UK – chairing national groups and networks), and prior to that as Head of MarComms for a £3 billion FTSE 100 retail group. In these executive roles, Michael led brand and rebrand strategies, global marketing campaigns, and broad stakeholder engagement – delivering sustained growth in recruitment, commercial and philanthropic incomes and achieving global brand profile and engagement.
He is a fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Marketing (FCIM) and the Royal Society for the Arts (FRSA), and a long-standing member (and multiple-awards recipient) of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (MCIPR) and the Public Relations & Communications Association (PRCA). Michael was presented with the ‘Professional of the Year’ award at the 2021 PRCA Awards; ‘Outstanding Independent Practitioner’ award at the 2019 CIPR PRide NE awards; and earlier that year with the prestigious ‘Laureate’ and ‘Crystal Apple’ awards from CASE, for whom he is a founding member of its European Regional Council and sat on its Global Board of Trustees (as well as an Interim role as Vice-President in 2021-22). Michael is an investment partner and adviser of global marketing training provider Fabric Academy, has delivered lectures and presentations in Europe, the US, Middle East, and Asia and regularly contributes thought leadership features for international press and podcasts.
Michael and his family live in the shadow of The Angel of The North in Gateshead, North-East England. He is a Freeman of the City of Newcastle, an ambassador of a children’s charity, a trustee of an arts organisation, a Higher Education donor and mentor, a passionate Newcastle United season ticket-holder, and an active musician and writer.
